Handout and reflection questions for Romans 8:1-13.

Rom 8v1-13 handout

Dear GCBC Parents:

We will be looking at Romans 8:1-13 this Sunday which gives us more detail on the work of the Holy Spirit. In Romans 7, Paul reminds us that working hard to obey the law is not enough, and he states this again in 8:7-8. Sin still prevails. But for those who belong to Jesus Christ, there is no condemnation (8:1), and we have the power of the Holy Spirit working in us to free us from the power of sin in our lives (8:2). How powerful is this Holy Spirit power? So powerful he brought Jesus back from the dead! And we have that same power living in us (8:11).

A good analogy to use with our children might be in talking with them about a battery operated toy (like a remote control car, electric scooter, or even a torch). As the battery loses life, the toy doesn’t work as well. It doesn’t light up, roll as quickly, or make sounds as precisely. Once we recharge the battery or place new batteries in the toy, it works far better! It lights up brightly, rolls faster, and makes clear and precise sounds. Like the low battery toy working so hard to light up or roll around, we struggle to obey the law. We don’t have enough power in ourselves to obey the law all the time. It’s difficult to keep going on. However, when we believe in Jesus to make us right with God, we receive the Holy Spirit who gives us power to live for God. It’s like that toy that works so well once it’s been given new batteries.

I am including the same video links as from last week in case you missed them. They are good descriptions of the Holy Spirit for our children and teens. Again, talk with your children about how we know the Spirit is working in us. Give them an example from your own life. And pray that it will draw them to the love of our Saviour!

God Bless,

Mandy
