KIDS and YOUTH MATERIALS

Dear GCBC Parents:

This week is our final sermon in Jonah. We read in chapter 4 how Jonah gets angry with God for showing mercy to the Ninevites and then is grateful to God for showing him mercy with the shade of a plant. The Lord wants Jonah to recognise that everyone deserves His mercy. Here again we have a wonderful opportunity to talk with our children about the Gospel. The final “Digging Deeper” verses are Titus 3:4-7. Use these verses to discuss how grateful we should be for God’s mercy towards us.

God Bless,

Mandy

Digging Deeper Verses (NLT) – Draw or write out your thoughts about these verses

How did Jonah respond to God’s mercy towards the Ninevites?

Jonah 4:1-2b – “This change of plans greatly upset Jonah, and he became very angry. So he complained to the LORD about it: “Didn’t I say before I left home that you would do this, LORD? That is why I ran away to Tarshish!”

What do we learn about God’s character in verse 2?

Jonah 4:2b – “I knew that you are a merciful and compassionate God, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. You are eager to turn back from destroying people.”

How did God show mercy to Jonah? How did Jonah feel about God’s mercy towards him?

Jonah 4:5-6 – “Jonah went out of the city and sat to the east of the city and made a booth for himself there. He sat under it in the shade, till he should see what would become of the city. Now the LORD God appointed a plant and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to save him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant.”

How did God show us mercy and compassion? How does this make you feel?

Titus 3:4-7 – “But— When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. Because of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.”
