How Do We Make Sense of Corona Virus – John Piper

I would recommend giving this post a listen or a read when you have a moment. John Piper, a pastor in the USA, discusses how we should think about this coronavirus.

Please don’t miss his final point. This virus is a “thunder clap of God’s mercy.” By that he means that this is a reminder to everyone that God is patient as judgment looms. A just judgment is coming, and this is (yet another) reminder that people should repent and turn to God while there is time.

Consider what Peter says in 2 Peter 3:1-10 (I’ll quote vs. 9-10) – The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

Peter is answering the objector who asks, “Where is the promise of His coming? Everything continues just as it always has.” Peter’s reply is to remind him (and us) that judgment is certainly coming. The only reason it hasn’t yet is because God is patiently drawing in a people who will repent and turn to Him. Then the end will come like a thief.
